TechCrunch Disrupt Startup Battlefield 20: A most unusual mother-daughter chat

I never anticipated a mother-daughter chat would begin with “We need to talk about what a press embargo means…”

My 12-year-old was with me when I suddenly cheered at my phone and started dancing around the living room. My fledgling startup Betweened was selected for the TechCrunch Disrupt Startup Battlefield 20

“Awesome!” She paused. “What does this mean in kid terms?”

“It’s the Silicon Valley version of Shark Tank.”

She joined in the dancing. Then we talked embargoes.

Now, three weeks later, having protected the secret fiercely, she and I can both talk freely.

  1. I’m thrilled to announce my new company, Betweened, on a mission to provide a responsible, empowering social media option for families. Join our email list to find out more.

  2. On Wednesday (Sep 20), I’ll debut our beta version onstage at Disrupt as part of the Startup Battlefield 20. We’re starting with a focus on curated, age-appropriate short form content for kids. Join the waiting list for details on when you can join.

  3. We’re fundraising as well as looking for content creators and team members as we build out social features for kids to connect and share content along with the ability for parents to customize the experience. Ping me on LinkedIn or via email.

While Betweened as a venture is new for me, my drive to provide innovative and enriching interactions for kids is not. Every big bet I’ve made has taught me what I need to know to be here now. Moderating communities for Highlights for Children… my quirky indie game Stride and Prejudice… Elmo’s Musical Monsterpiece… Netflix’s interactive You vs Wild with Bear Grylls… I love nothing more than blending great content and product experiences.

This work is also more personal than ever, as I understand firsthand the allure and challenges of social media for families. With Betweened, we can teach this tech native generation to be mindful and intentional in their media interactions.

Meanwhile, I now need to have my next mother-daughter chat… Finding a strength greater than your fears in order to pursue your dreams.
