How often do you unlock your phone without even thinking about it?

Welcome to Day 3!

Now that you’ve started noticing how often you pick up your phone and have rearranged your apps, let’s add one more layer of mindfulness. Today, we’re focusing on how we access our phones. The easier it is to unlock your phone, the more likely you are to use it without thinking.

If unlocking your phone is effortless—whether through facial recognition, fingerprint scanning, or a passcode you’ve memorized for years—you might not even realize how often you’re unlocking it.

Your challenge today is to change your passcode to something new. We'd also recommend turning off facial recognition or fingerprint scanning for at least the remainder of the challenge. Why? Because this small disruption will force you to pause and think each time you unlock your phone. It’s not about making phone use difficult, but about giving yourself that extra moment to ask, Do I really need to be on my phone right now?

It may feel inconvenient at first, but that’s the point! Creating a tiny obstacle can help you break the habit of mindlessly unlocking and scrolling.

As you go through the day with your new access, reflect on whether this small change impacts your phone use. Do you find yourself pausing more before unlocking? Are there moments when you realize you don’t actually need to use your phone?

Again, remember: this is about mindfulness, not perfection. Be patient with yourself as you adjust.

Let us know in the comments: Have you ever changed your passcode before? Are you willing to try it now? How did it feel using a new passcode today?
